Stars Skilling Up

A Youth Retail Skills Program hosted specially for our Darwin Stars gave them a fantastic opportunity to learn more about working in the retail sector.

The program was run by the GPT Group, which operates Casuarina Square Shopping Centre, and a range of retailers, who gave up their time after hours to engage with Stars students.

On the night we had over 20 of our young women spread across three retailers, where they role-played providing excellent customer service and learnt about the particular skills required for each retail setting.

The Stars who participated are all at the age where getting part-time work is high in their agenda and they relished the chance to learn more about working in retail.

Year 11 Star, Faith, said “It was really fun and interactive.  They really encouraged us to have a go and taught us about customer service and presenting yourself in a positive way.”

Year 9 Star, Sheena, said the experience she had at the Saltbush Café was one that not many people would get.

“It was amazing for me. It was fun when we got to make the hot chocolates and I enjoyed learning how to set the tables. This experience has made me interested in working in a place like this café and doing more barista work!”

A big thank you to Sean Newcombe from the GPT Group for organising the event and also to the wonderful staff from Gloria Jeans, Hairhouse Warehouse & Saltbush Café for sharing their time and expertise so generously.
