Northern WA Year 12 Stars Meet in Broome
Our senior Stars from Karratha and Roebourne in Western Australia recently travelled to Broome to attend the inaugural North-West Year 12 Induction over three days during first term.
The proceedings commenced with a beautiful Welcome to Country and Smoking Ceremony performed by Pat Torres from Mayi Harvest followed by an enjoyable barbecue.
The first day of induction was jammed packed with team-building games, workshops based on Year 12 transitions space, pathway planning and code-switching.
The highlight of the day was the Futures Forum where partners, local businesses, and organisations gathered to talk with our students about employment opportunities. It was a successful event and the students left the event more confident and excited about their potential pathways after graduation.
The second day commenced with an interview panel of Stars mentors and 2021 graduates. It was a very special morning with the panellists sharing their personal journey through life. To finish off the wonderful two-day induction Pat Torres delivered a bush medicine workshop which was a highlight of the trip for many of the students.
Mentors reported they were thrilled to watch the students grow during the three days spent together, as new friendships were formed and confidence was built during activities that involved public speaking.
The Year 12 inductions hosted by the Stars Foundation focus on four pillars designed to improve health and education outcomes. These include:
• Education, Training and Employment – encourages active engagement in education and the development of positive plans for a successful transition into full time employment or further study.
• Healthy Lifestyles – addresses healthy habits for life including nutrition, self-care and personal hygiene, sport and fitness.
• Wellbeing – focuses on personal wellbeing and mental health.
• Community, Culture and Leadership – celebrates First Nations culture and encourages activity within communities which develops confidence and pride.
We congratulate the Year 12s on choosing to be part of the Stars program and embracing all the opportunities offered and we look forward to supporting our Year 12s in their last year of schooling.
